AIKEN, S.C. – The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Office of Information Management (NA-IM) and Chief Information Officer (CIO) recognized Savannah River Site (SRS) teams during the 2026 CIO Achievement Awards, honoring their significant contributions to information technology, cybersecurity, and enterprise collaboration across the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE). The ceremony was held at the NNSA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. on June 22.

NNSA CIO Jamie Wolff described the awards as an opportunity to celebrate projects that deliver measurable mission impact, strengthen national security, and advance technology capabilities across the enterprise. “The most impactful work is what we want to recognize,” he said. “For us, impact means improving mission execution, increasing security and enabling deterrence across the NSE.”
“Receiving multiple awards is a testament to the innovation, professionalism, and mission focus of our workforce,” said Jeff Griffin, President and Chief Executive Officer for Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS), the Site’s managing and operations contractor. “These teams are strengthening the digital backbone that supports national security by modernizing critical infrastructure, advancing responsible AI, and improving enterprise‑wide collaboration. Their work accelerates our readiness for the future and reinforces our commitment to delivering secure, resilient capabilities for the Department of Energy and NNSA.”
Operational Excellence & Efficiency: SRS Fiber Infrastructure Upgrade Team

The SRNS Information Technology (IT) department was recognized for completing a major modernization of the Site’s fiber infrastructure, one of the most significant communications upgrades in decades. The team installed more than 40,000 linear feet of new 288‑strand fiber optic cabling, creating a dedicated high‑capacity connection between the Central Data Center and facilities supporting the Site’s pit production mission. This new circuit delivers the speed, redundancy, and data throughput required to support modern digital manufacturing and the data‑intensive missions ahead. Completed ahead of the 2027 deadline and within budget, the upgrade positions SRNS to handle 6–10 terabytes of data per work package for a workforce expected to exceed 1,500 personnel in this area.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Honors: SRNS AI Integration Team

SRNS also received recognition for major advancements in responsible AI implementation across SRS during FY25. The SRNS IT team expanded ChatSRS, the Site’s secure generative AI platform, to full sitewide availability. Employees leveraged the tool across 44,000 distinct user topic types, supporting research, text analysis, writing workflows and rapid access to institutional knowledge. The team also launched several specialized AI‑enabled services and integrated AI tools into software development, analytics and technical operations. A key highlight was the successful proof‑of‑concept that automatically classified 300,000+ requisition items, paving the way for improved procurement analytics and future automation.
Cross-Organizational Collaboration & Enterprise-Wide Solutions: One NNSA Access Team
Many SRS employees also contributed to the One NNSA Access (ONA) Team, recognized for creating the first enterprise‑wide credential verification and physical access framework across all NNSA labs, plants and sites. The initiative, jointly led by NA-IM and NNSA Office of Defense Nuclear Security (NA‑70), established a standardized process enabling online pre‑registration for HSPD‑12 badge holders. Personnel now register once per facility for the lifetime of their credential, eliminating redundant paperwork and unnecessary visits to badge offices. More than 100 contributors across the enterprise helped bring this solution to reality.
“It is an honor to see our teams recognized by NNSA for their outstanding achievements in IT and enterprise collaboration,” said Bruce Page, SRNS Senior Vice President and CIO. “These awards reflect the dedication, expertise, and forward-thinking mindset of our workforce. By modernizing our fiber infrastructure, advancing responsible AI solutions, and participating in streamlining enterprise-wide access, we are not only supporting the mission of SRS, but also strengthening national security across the enterprise. I am proud of our teams’ commitment to operational excellence and their readiness to meet the evolving challenges of tomorrow.”
