AIKEN, S.C. – Since the early 1950s, the Standards Laboratory has been a quiet powerhouse behind the Savannah River Site’s (SRS) success by delivering precision, protecting people, and ensuring mission readiness. For more than seven decades, this team has safeguarded the accuracy of the instruments relied upon every day at the Site. In fiscal year 2026 alone, the Lab completed more than 4,600 calibrations, directly contributing to safe, efficient operations across diverse mission areas.

Managed and operated by Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) Site Services department, the Standards Laboratory provides highly specialized calibration services for instruments that measure parameters including dimensional, electrical, flow, force, mass, pressure, temperature, torque, and vibration.
“Ensuring each reading is precise is essential for maintaining operational excellence and mission integrity,” said Randy Keenan, SRNS Director of Site Services. “The Lab’s work directly supports SRS and industry partners, including Battelle Savannah River Alliance and others such as the Kansas City National Security Complex where we were called upon to facilitate high pressure calibrations, allowing them to meet mission objectives. Accuracy at this level underpins safety, product performance, and mission success across the Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration.”
The science behind calibration, metrology, blends mathematics, physics, and technical expertise to produce high-accuracy measurements that verify instruments are operating within strict tolerances. Even slight deviations can affect processes, product quality and safety outcomes.
The Standards Laboratory is accredited under ISO 17025, the international benchmark for calibration. Since 2009, the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program has reviewed and verified the Lab’s competence, ensuring each calibration is traceable to recognized national and international measurement standards.
“This is a very unique field where attention to detail matters most when making measurements at the micro and nano level,” said Allen Bare, SRNS Standards Laboratory Manager. “It’s a different kind of science that takes a special mindset to be successful in this work, and I’m proud of the teams that come together each day to make it happen.”
SRS engineers and metrologists with backgrounds in the military, aerospace, and other precision-focused fields conduct thousands of calibrations each year, remaining flexible, cross‑trained and ready to meet shifting mission demands. Most Measurement and Test equipment at SRS requires recalibration every 12 months, making the Lab a constant operational partner for the Site’s facilities. Today, the Lab supports 8,000-9,000 instruments, a number expected to grow significantly. With the Savannah River Plutonium Processing Facility preparing to ramp up operations, workload is projected to increase by another 900-1,000 instruments annually.

The SRS Standards Laboratory has been a cornerstone of safe, secure, and high-quality operations. As SRS takes on new mission priorities, the need for reliable, accurate measurements will only grow. With a proven history, a skilled technical workforce, and a commitment to excellence, the Lab will continue supporting the Site’s evolving missions with the same precision and reliability that has defined its work since the beginning.
